Secondary growth occurs in the lateral
   meristems comprising two types of cells.

   The  vascular  cambium adds layers of vascular tissue called secondary
   xylem (wood) and secondary phloem .

   The  cork  cambium  replaces  the  epidermis  with  periderm, which is
   thicker and tougher.
