   The  Na^+  and  K^+  gradients  are maintained by the sodium-potassium
   pump.
<P>
   The ions diffuse back across the plasma membrane through ion channels.
<P>
   Since  there  are more K^+ channels than Na^+ channels, there is a net
   outflow of positive cations.
<P>
   The net electrical gradient yields a resting potential of -70 mV.
