A colony of naked mole rats has only one reproducing female, the queen, who mates with one to three males (kings).
The rest of the colony consists of non-reproductive females and males who forage for underground roots and tubers and care for the queen, the kings, and young.
Such altruistic (selfless) behavior is not explained by natural selection, which emphasizes individual reproduction.
