Young birds from Germany were oriented toward the southwest, their traditional wintering grounds in the Mediterranean.

Recently, some blackcaps from continental Europe started wintering in Britain; these birds had a migratory orientation toward the west (Britain), indicating different genetic migratory instincts between the 2 populations.
