Eutrophication.

Sewage and agricultural runoff leads to excess levels of nitrogen in rivers, causing explosive algal growth called eutrophication.

Many rivers in eastern central US drain into the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.

In the summer, the algal bloom depletes the water of oxygen when the phytoplankton die and decompose, creating a large "dead zone" of low oxygen and marine life.
